SARAH: Welcome back to the Southeast Ohio Qi Hub video series. It is now a new year and we have a new announcement of something cool that's coming out. So today I am joined by the one and only Carry Love, who's amazing. Um, carry Love is usually on that side of the camera. CARRIE: I prefer to be on that side of the camera. SARAH: Not today. Not today. You're here with me and you look lovely today. CARRIE: Oh, thank you. I put in an effort. Well, it looks amazing. Thank you. It looks amazing. Thank you. Thank you. SARAH: Alright, so today we are going to talk about CARRIE: Diabetes And Me, which is a diabetes self-management education and support video series. That we've created that is online. SARAH: That's so awesome. So it's called Diabetes and Me. Yes. And is a online video series for diabetes self-management. CARRIE: And it's free. SARAH: And it's free. CARRIE: Totally free. SARAH: Totally free. CARRIE: Yes. We're not collecting data, we're not selling anything. There aren't ads. It's free. What it is is, okay here with the QI hub, we have some of the best diabetes experts access to some of the best, experts, not only in Southeast Ohio. I kind of think the whole world SARAH: Nice. The world. I like it. CARRIE: The whole world. So why wouldn't we put all of our superpowers together to create an educational series to fight this thing. And so that's what we did. We created this series. That's free online. Easy to do. SARAH: Awesome. Fantastic. So Diabetes and Me. We have all the experts in there. Including myself and I also Know, she's really good, you know? There's a couple lovely people in here who I also think we should talk about. Because they're wonderful.Okay. CARRIE: So it's kind of like a journey. And we're following two people with diabetes who have diabetes, who are from southeast Ohio. These two individuals are awesome. SARAH: Oh, I love that. CARRIE: Jill and Kass are super cute. They're fun. SARAH: They're, they're so amazing. They're from here, CARRIE: they're from here. They're really good at, uh, articulating what's important at that moment or what they're going through so that others can be in the journey with them. And I think that's important, that it's not just like someone talking at you, but we're watching people do it. And it's, it's been really good. SARAH: I'm so excited about this. Alright, so why did we do this? So I, I know that, um, there's a lot still more to talk about about the series. So what about diabetes? Why did we do this? CARRIE: Okay, so when somebody gets diabetes, it's life changing. Like you have to rethink all of your food and how you structure your day and what you bring with you. And it is overwhelming. SARAH: Overwhelming, absolutely. CARRIE: It's overwhelming. And it is recommended that individuals who are diagnosed get eight hours of one-on-one training with a diabetes expert. But there are barriers with that. Sometimes you're not able to make it out. Sometimes it all comes at once and it just sort of washes over you and you can't absorb it. So our goal with this is to cover the basics so that you under, so people can understand what's going on, the vocab, the priorities, and from there, when they meet with their diabetes educator, they can bring their specific questions. They've had a chance to process it, think about it, and, and be like, okay, this is what's meaningful to me. This is what I wanna talk about. How do I problem solve this? SARAH: That's fantastic. That is so good. I'm so excited. Alright, so that's excellent. So tell me what's in it. Like what what are we talking about? CARRIE: All right. So this is based off of what diabetes education would normally have, but it's like on a generic level. So it can hit more people. And so our topics are what diabetes is like, what's happening in your body. Healthy eating. The types of complications that can come up. Uh, how to identify it, how to treat it. Medications, diabetes, medications. SARAH: Whaaaat CARRIE: a great pharmacist who talks about, SARAH: I don't, CARRIE: they're some of the best videos in the series. I'm gonna say. Um, good idea. Being prepared for emergencies. Like what do you want in a day pack or an emergency pack, or if you're gonna go on vacation. The importance of the emotional side of diabetes. Support systems that you need to build up around you. The importance of movement, the importance of monitoring, how to monitor, uh, and super important goal setting and problem solving. Because when you have diabetes, you are problem solving every single day. SARAH: Every single day. Yeah. Absolutely. How is this organized? So yeah, it's free. I can log in. No one's sell me anything. I just log in so I can figure out where I am in those modules. I can just log back in. CARRIE: Yep. SARAH: So what, tell me about the modules and the videos. CARRIE: All right. So we have about 43 videos. And they're structured, they're group into modules. There are seven modules based on themes and in an order that we feel is important. Uh, and when a person, you might only have 15 minutes. So you log in and you wash 15 minutes, and then when you jump off, it remembers where you're at. SARAH: Nice. CARRIE: And so then you come back in, uh, there are videos. There's some texts to support the videos. There are quizzes, but they're, that's just to make sure you're paying attention. They're not really hard and they're not graded. Don't worry. Yeah. That, and we're working on a handbook, a support book to go with it. So you can have a reference. SARAH: Fantastic. 'cause I would like paper. I'm a paper. CARRIE: Yeah. I get it. SARAH: I'm a paper person. CARRIE: I like, SARAH: I think I would love it. CARRIE: Multiple modalities. SARAH: I think I would love that. Okay. So that sounds amazing. And I'm very excited about it. So the last thing maybe we should talk about are conflicts of interest. CARRIE: Well, my conflict of interest is, is that I really want people to like it and I want them to do it. Um, no, no, no. SARAH: There's no conflicts. No, no conflicts. CARRIE: No, this is so great because there are no conflicts. This is like literally the experts coming together and sharing their wisdom and putting it out for free. It's like one of those happy moments where things come together. SARAH: I think we also have been waiting for this for a very long time. The ability to give patients a little bit more maybe feeling of control or power over their diabetes with more access to resources that that may work for them. CARRIE: Yes. SARAH: Fantastic. So I would like to say a giant thank you to Carrie, love and sidekick Matt, for the most amazing work done on this video series. There was a lot of work put into this and I think it's exciting that it's finally out for us to access. So do it, CARRIE: do it, watch it, share it with your office. Share it with, uh, your patients and clients. Uh, yeah. Share it. It's great. If you want to launch it in a space and you want some tips or or to collaborate, reach out and we'll try to work with you to figure out, you know, what can we do to help support you with that. But share it. We're, we're excited. SARAH: How do I, how do I get the link? CARRIE: We have a link right here. I don't know. We're working the shot. You see the link? It's right here. I where did it go? That's my, the sidekick is gonna do that. SARAH: The sidekicks in charge. Wonderful. Awesome. Carrie, love, thank you so much. I'm so glad I got to spend some time with you today. CARRIE: Me too. This is always great. I know it's a great time. SARAH: So thank you again for joining us for the Southeast Ohio Qi Hub video series, and we encourage you to sign up for the D-S-M-E-S-V-S, um, and watch some video series on diabetes self-management. So thanks so much. Have a great day.
